Mardi Gras is officially here! We hope you saved some energy to power through Lundi Gras and Fat Tuesday! There are some fantastic shows on Frenchmen to keep you on your toes. Whether or not you choose to stay up through all of Lundi Gras night into Fat Tuesday, or take a snooze and hit the streets in the early morn, Frenchmen will be poppin’ off with some incredible music no matter what time of day.
Papa Mali + Cha Wa: Lundi Gras, Monday, 3/3 at d.b.a. @ 10PM
With a heavy Southern blues influence and reggae twist, guitarist Papa Mali brings a unique flair to all his performances. Lundi Gras night you can find him with Mardi Gras Indian band Cha Wa. Merging the sounds of Mardi Gras Indian street chants and blues, Cha Wa creates a sound of their own, unparalleled by any other band. Witness these New Orleans greats do what they do best.
Brass-A-Holics: Lundi Gras, Monday, 3/3 at The Maison @ Midnight
Loud, funky and in your face, the Brass-a-holics are a pure scream of irrepressible NOLA-style joy. Delivering intoxicating melodies backed up by impeccable musical credentials, this octet of young jazz talents is based around the core of a traditional New Orleans brass elements (trombone, sousaphone, trumpet and sax) but also mixes in keyboards, electric guitar and a full percussion section for an experience that must be seen to be believed.
Gravity A’s 8th Annual Lundi Gras Bacchanal feat. Nigel Hall Band: Lundi Gras, Monday, 3/3 at Dragon’s Den @ 10PM
One of the longest standing Lundi Gras traditions on the street would have to be Gravity A’s sunrise performance at the Dragon’s Den. Their “rare groove” attracts music lovers of all sorts. They jam and yet are extremely tight. Check out these fellas play some psychedelic tunes on one of the best nights of the year! Also joining them for the big shebang is The Nigel Hall Band, another New Orleans’ favorite, along with Khris & Danny’s Noize Ordinance feat. Danny Abel on guitar and Khris Royal on sax, The Quickening, Modern Measure (ATL) and Daria and the Hip Drops.
New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars + Gypsyphonic Disko: Fat Tuesday, 3/4 at d.b.a. @ 3PM
New Orleans super group Klezmer All-Stars take folk music to a new level. By stretching the boundaries tradition, but keeping the fundamentals, New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars create a fantastically unique sound original to this city. Comprised of New Orleans greats such as Kevin O’Day, Willie Green and Ben Ellman (among others), the Klezmer All-Stars are what you want to see this Fat Tuesday! Gypsyphonic Disko follows the All-Stars with a bounce take to Klezmer music. Galactic’s Ben Ellman and New Orleans’ DJ Quickie Mart are the fellas that make it happen.
Mojoflo: Fat Tuesday, 3/4 at The Maison @ 9PM
The sexy funk band Mojoflo utilizes blazing horns and a sizzlin’ front woman to create a contemporary soul, funk and R & B sound. This incredibly diverse ensemble will give the crowd a lil’ bit of everything–a sound for all musical tastes! Stay on your tired feet and dance the Fat Tuesday aches away to Mojoflo at The Maison!
Mike Dillon and Friends: Fat Tuesday, 3/4 at d.b.a. @ 11PM
If you’re considering going to sleep early on Fat Tuesday, think again! Yes, Mardi Gras is taxing and yes, you probably haven’t slept in three days. Irregardless, Mardi Gras is a marathon, not a sprint and Mike Dillon is waiting at the finish line. Check out this incredible vibraphonist and percussionist Fat Tuesday night. You’ll be happy you did and we’re sure he’ll bring up some great surprise guests as well.
