Trumpet prodigy Shamarr Allen has been involved in the rich musical scene of New Orleans for his entire life, drawing on genres from hip hop to funk to good old-fashioned brass with his band the Underdawgs. They’ve recorded with a top-notch array of nationally known artists like R.E.M., Lenny Kravitz, Patti LaBelle and more. Shamarr himself has performed at the White House with Harry Connick Jr. and played the National Anthem for President Obama, and the band toured Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 2011 as musical ambassadors from the US State Department. All this accomplishment doesn’t mean the boys have lost sight of their hometown groove, though: you can catch the Underdawgs making booties shake and hearts sing on stages across town.
With seemingly inexhaustible charm and impressive musical chops, Shamarr is a bandleader of the old school. His lightning-fast changes and impressive stage show make the Underdawgs a must-see for any NOLA visitor.
